“Players want more and they really want a big tournament,” said White. “By bringing a TV event to Detroit, we’re giving the players what they want.”

Players compete locally and nationally for prizes. This year, tournaments will be held at casinos in eight states across the country.

"This is so awesome," said Mutchler in an HPT article. "I finally got the monkey off my back."

Thulson outlasted 401 opponents and then beat Michael Pempin in heads-up play to take down first place and a cool $180,810 at the Colorado event.

"The Heartland Poker League gives small buy-in players a chance to play for millions of dollars in cash and prizes, plus a shot at playing on national television," said Matt Harkness, General Manager, Four Winds Casino Resort. "We are very happy to be home to this exciting event."

HPT events could be the biggest bargain in poker.

Jesse Green, a farmer from Harcourt, Iowa, had plans to vacation in Cancun, Mexico. His decision to stay at home and enter the HPT event proved to be a good one.

The Heartland Poker Tour is also attracting a larger field.

176 players set out to be crowned the first champion of 2008.
